Being quite a litigious country, our legal profession is one that isn’t going away anytime soon. Most of the publicity, and the high profiles go to the lawyers, and sometimes the judges in the system. If you don’t mind sitting in the background, being anonymous, working hard at not being noticed while, well, working hard, then court reporting might be for you.

In order for anyone to become a court reporter there is of course training to be completed. A bachelors degree and specific court reporting training is necessary to teach the basics of the law, legal terminology and the morass of legal obligations involved in the profession. Different states have differing requirements so check locally for the specific needs of your area.

Equipment also plays a large part in a court reporters day. Training should also cover the stenotype, both new and old, as well as newer advances like the stenomask, digital recording and transcription. Technology has made our lives both easier and more complicated. We can now do more than ever in both quality and quantity, but need to be technologically aware to be able to work all the equipment.

Once qualified you have several options. You can work freelance, for an agency, or in-house at a law firm. Each will have its own advantages and disadvantages. Freelancers get to pick and choose when and where they work, but have to work harder to get the jobs. Agency court reporters will be assigned jobs as they come up, and is a middle ground between working freelance and as an employee. Both options might be intermittent as far as work goes, depending on where you live. The third option is as an employee with a legal firm. This is more secure, but also more restrictive and probably more narrow in scope. It does offer the security of a regular paycheck though.

The day to day work of a court reporter is to record proceedings. That might be in court, in meetings, recording depositions, trial preparations and a myriad of other tasks. You will soon find a machine of choice with which to work, and it’s then your responsibility to keep it as up to date and efficient as possible.

Just because the training is over, doesn’t mean that’s it. Embracing technology and learning to make use of it is what has enable court reporting to endure in modern times. The ability to accept changes and work with them is what adds longevity to the career, and variety to the work. You don’t have to just work for legal firms or in the courts. Many educational institutions have court reporters to help hearing impaired people, as do broadcasters. There is now a significant opportunity to work in media providing subtitles and captions for programs and events.

Like any worthwhile career, being a court reporter takes time and study. Once you’re qualified you still have to keep learning to keep up to date. Unlike other legal careers you don’t get the recognition, publicity or huge salaries, but you get the warm feeling that the legal profession couldn’t function without you.
