It would be a mistake to think a court reporter was nothing but a glorified secretary. While a big part of the role is typing, it’s slowly diminishing as the main focus of the job. Court reporters are charged with an important responsibility, to create an accurate written record of everything that’s said in a trial, deposition, meeting, motion or other legal proceeding.
Many skilled court reporters can also transcribe any audio into text, provide captioning services to the broadcast media, help the hearing impaired as well as create official records of meetings, legal and otherwise. Court reporters with the necessary skills can often be found in education centers or other places where the hearing impaired can be found. Their ability to transcribe audio into the written word is invaluable in including everyone in conferences, meetings, lectures and other events.
The broadcast media also makes great use of court reporters by using them to translate speech into subtitles or captions for television. Their ability to type exceptionally fast and accurately is what makes them so valuable. While speech recognition software is now very advanced, it is still prone to mistakes and can have difficulty with strong accents. There are no such problems with a human court reporter as they can interpret what they hear.
A good court reporter works hard at not being noticed. A big part of the job is to sit as quietly and as unobtrusively as possible so as to not divert attention away from the proceedings. This is a skill that is taught at court reporting school and is often mistaken for the reporter not doing anything. This is by design, so the parties can talk freely and concentrate on what’s going on rather than on the reporter. This is one of the main reasons why the court reporter is underestimated, but like most in the legal profession, the majority of their work is done away from the court, and away from publicity.
Court reporter candidates also need to have a good grasp of technology and be technologically minded. New innovations such as the computer-integrated courtroom, the stenomask, new stenotypes and captioning machines all need skill to operate, and significant skill to operate well. Much depends on the reporters ability to work quickly, and most importantly, accurately. Their finished work will often form part of a case and as such needs to be completely accurate and above reproach.
It is this ability to grasp new developments and use them effectively that has enabled the profession to progress and to become essential to industries other than law. In accepting change and working with it instead of against it, court reporters are uniquely placed to work in many environments as well as a courtroom. Just because a court reporter seems to just sit there and type, don’t make the mistake of thinking that’s all they can do. They might just surprise you.
