Often the job description is pretty much what the job entails, being a court reporter is one of those nice exceptions though. Like many in the legal profession, the majority of the work is done outside the courtroom, with appearing in front of a judge the smallest part of the role.

The majority of the court reporters role is going to be in legal offices taking depositions. Providing transcripts for these and other proceedings will make up the lion’s share of the work. These functions provide the essential written records of testimony’s and the necessary written records to allow the legal system to function as it does.

Another major function of a court reporter that keeps them out of the courtroom is transcribing existing documentation. Evidence comes in many forms, so it’s often necessary to transcribe videos, audio, witness testimony and other non-written forms of evidence into written evidence. The court reporter is ideally suited for this task, so this is often what the day entails.

Translation is also a valuable function of a court reporter. A bilingual court reporter can earn significantly more if they speak a popular language. They will be called upon to translate everything from testimonies, evidence, statements and other non-legal material. Court reporters are often used by business to translate during business meetings in order to allow all parties to communicate effectively.

It is possible to train as a court reporter and not work in the legal profession at all. Business also makes good use of court reporters by using them to record shareholder meetings, corporate meetings and other company gatherings. The court reporters ability to record quickly and accurately everything that is said in a given environment is valuable to business. The emphasis on accountability, and the raft of legislation around company records will keep many court reporters in work for years to come.

Education and broadcasting also make good use of the skills by using them to help the hearing impaired. The ability to quickly translate speech into the written word helps deaf and partially deaf people communicate, and be communicated to in an extremely effective way. Closed captioning in almost real time is used by many broadcasters to cater for the hearing impaired during their transmissions. While much of it is done beforehand, live events, news, breaking stories and other time sensitive pieces need a skilled human being to transcribe effectively.

So you see, even though the initial training will lean heavily towards a career in the legal profession, you don’t ever have to step inside a courtroom if you don’t want to. Most of us do because it’s easily the most exciting aspect of the job. The other aspects, such as helping the hearing impaired is also incredibly rewarding, and something I would encourage any court reporter to try.
