Court reporting was at one time thought to be a dying art. The advent of digital courtrooms, speech recognition software and video evidence looked for a while to be sounding the death knell for the profession. However, court reporters have embraced the new developments and turned them to their advantage.

Even in a computer-integrated courtroom, the court reporter, or stenographer is still regarded as the best way to record the proceedings and produce a legally binding transcript of it. Lawyers use them to record meetings, negotiations and other activities as they know they are the quickest, most efficient way of documenting everything. Court reporters have also diversified in transcribing for television, and helping the deaf. In fact, there is now something of a shortage of skilled, experienced court reporters despite the advances in technology.

The process of turning the spoken word into text is called Communication Access Real-time Translation or CART, and is a growing field. Organizations such as churches, outreach groups, government departments, hospitals, clinics and many others all find these services incredibly valuable, increasing the demand for the skills. The explosion of satellite and cable television has also furthered this demand as court reporters are ideal for captioning broadcasts and providing subtitles and other communication media.

The ability to adapt is what has enabled the court reporter to survive. Instead of fighting technology and losing, the industry has embraced it and made good use of it. By training court reporters to use the technology, and to utilize it in inventive ways the industry has ensured its survival for many years to come. The traditional stenotype might be on its last legs, but the court reporter now has much more to offer.

Many employers and agencies are finding it difficult to fill court reporting vacancies because the demand is so great. Their ability to speed up the legal process, quickly and accurately record proceedings, depositions, trials and preparations, that almost every law office has at least one on their books. The skillset of the court reporter and the variety of skills they have has made them uniquely useful in the legal profession.

Not only can they record everything they see or hear, they can research, use legal databases and create legal documents. The ability to provide completely digital records is also helping to add longevity to the industry. With the increasing emphasis on saving resources and going green, the ability to work completely digitally has enabled the court reporter to be one step ahead of the rest of the legal profession. Court documents can now be completely digital, recordings can be made digitally, and new stenotypes can create digital-only documents to save paper.

Being a court reporter is a rich and varied career. The ability to move and embrace change is essential in order to survive, almost as important as those typing skills. Learning the field properly, and collecting as many associated skills as possible will make the career of the court reporter a long and fruitful one indeed.
